FAQ

Eco and ethical

My pieces are mostly one of a kind, small batch or vintage. I work with a lot of salvaged and repurposed materials, and source a lot of ethically or locally produced ones as well. See below for more info about my materials.

I’m not 100% eco yet, however that is the goal one day as I continue to grow. I always try to be transparent about what materials aren’t eco in my descriptions.

Many of these products are vintage, or created using previously loved materials. All flaws are always listed, please enlarge photos for details as well.

All clothing has been washed, and all items have been cleaned.

Please note that colours on items can vary from screen to screen.

Many of my items are hand crafted, and a lot of my jewellery uses beads that are entirely made by hand, or are vintage. There may be slight irregularities which add to the charm of the item.

Materials

For the clothing I dye, I use vintage pieces, or ethically made textiles. For dyes, I use natural earth pigments from a small business, real plant indigo, and all natural methods to bind the colour to the clothing. They can be washed like regular dye, but because they are in pastel shades, and to prevent colours from other garments bleeding onto the white, they are slightly more sensitive, so I recommend washing in cold water.

For my beads, I use mostly second hand beads, with a mix of ethically sourced recycled glass beads from Ghana, and Fair Trade ceramic beads from Kenya. The artisans set their own prices for these beads. The business where I get them from has personally been there to see the working conditions, and I feel that they are a reliable source.

I do use nylon string for my jewelry, which is plastic based, and not eco or ethical. I have chosen to use nylon, because part of being eco to me is making pieces that are super long lasting. Nylon matches the durability of the beads, and is far superior in that respect to hemp, cotton, or other plant alternatives. Once Earth Arts grows a little, I have sourced a place where I can get recycled nylon cord made. And then I hope to be able to order enough that I can provide it to other people too!

I also have crystals in some of my jewelry. Most of the stones I use are also secondhand. However I do have a supply from a few years ago that were purchased at a major craft store. Commercial crystal mining is not eco or ethical, and as soon as my supply is done, I plan to find a more sustainable alternative.

Vegan?

I am mostly plant based myself, however, I am fine with leather, shells, etc if it is second hand. I feel that if the item has already been created, then it should be loved and made use of.

A lot of my jewelry is not considered vegan, because I use a lot of shells – they are mostly from repurposed vintage. I do not use any new animal products in my creations, and all of my dye pigments are earth based.
